Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for a few of our most frequently asked questions regarding what Shrink Wrap is and the weather proofing and packaging services we provide.

What is Shrink Wrap?

Shrink Wrap is an incredibly durable low density polyethylene plastic made from low melt virgin resin. The we use is about 300 microns thick, about as thick as 5 sheets of A4 printer paper! It is 100% virgin resin, making it the strongest and most durable shrink wrap on the market today. Once heated, the plastic begins to bi-axially shrink, and the plastic reduces in size by up to 30% of its total original surface area.

Shrink Wrapping seems so straight forward, why don't I just do it myself?

The Shrink Wrapping technique is not rocket science, but things can go terribly wrong if you don't know what you are doing. The risk of fire is very high, and once you burn through the plastic, you are going to burn whatever it is you are trying to shrink wrap. We have seen disastrous results and had to remedy projects where the Shrink Wrapping was installed by rookies. If you are wrapping your Superyacht, house, or construction site, trust only trained and experienced professionals. Ask your Shrink Wrapping Installer - How many projects have they completed? What sort of Shrink Wrap are they Using?(insist that it must be 100% virgin resin, otherwise it will burn) Do they carry Public liability Insurance? Are they Sitesafe, and do they have a current Health and Safety Policy?

Can the Heat Gun damage the paintwork or structure underneath the Shrinkwrap?

No! When applied professionally, nothing under the shrink wrap will be damaged. The heat gun is never held over any one area for long enough to burn through the Shrink Wrap film. We have covered golf carts, yachts, planes, helicopters and buildings, and once uncovered, the paintwork is as it was prior to wrapping. When using our preservation tapes, we do recommend testing a small area of the paintwork first, as on the rare occassion, the tape has been known to pull paint off when being removed.

Will the Shrink Wrap stay attached during high winds?

Professionally installed, the Shrink Wrap can withstand winds of up to 50kms per hour. It will not detach from the scaffolding or yacht structure. However, Shrink Wrapped enclosures are intended to be used as "temporary structures", and like any temporary structure, they will not withstand severe weather or storms.

Is the Shrink Wrap UV protected?

Yes! The plastic contains the maximum UV inhibitors. On the construction site, your workers are protected form the harsh NZ sun. On your yacht, the paintwork, hardware and decking is all protected from exposure to the sun.
